Have you ever visited Petty's Island on the Delaware River? It's got an interesting history with a positive future and has solid opportunities for taking some great photos. Join me in my brief, but fascinating, photographic excursion to this island that sits between Camden NJ and Philadelphia PA.
You can see the Philadelphia skyline from several vantage points on the island, but this one above, from the southern end of Petty Island gives you the clearest, unobstructed view of the city.
The longer the lens the better when it comes to photographing some of the critters you may see in the distance.
I'm a big fan of minimalist photography and this field of grasses and weeds made for a good subject to photograph.
Petty Island GrassI'm often fascinated by the unique shapes that the natural world presents to us and I thought the two, 2-sided triangles were interesting in the composition below.
Nature Photography on Petty's IslandAnother chance on creating a visually interesting photo is to look for textures and contrasts. Late fall and early winter photography often gives you small pockets of color contrasted with muted colors where plants are at different stages heading into the harsh cold season. nature presents many occasions for shooting abstracts.

Petty Island Patterns And TexturesI was intrigued by the splotches of white and how the pattern was interrupted by the presence of this lone seagull.
In the "Petty Island Grasslands" photo below I used the Rule of Thirds to compose the photo. Sometimes it's good to break the compositional rules that photographers often employ, but in this case I used it based on the scene in front of me.

You get unique viewpoints to see both sides of the Delaware River, the two connecting bridges, and a plethora of scenes to photograph. Although the sky was overcast for the majority of our two hours hike around the island, I got a few keepers that I hope you enjoy. I took all of these photos during our two-hour walk around the island, with the exception of the bald eagle photos which was taken by my friend, wildlife and sports photographer, Jeff Mazzola.
