Montana sunrises illuminate the "Big Sky Country" with dramatic mountain  vibrant scattering light effects, and extreme seasonal time shifts.

Because light travels a much longer distance through the atmosphere at sunrise, shorter blue wavelengths scatter away while dramatic red, orange, and yellow hues dominate the wide horizon.

  • The "Hungry Horse Lake" name comes from a harsh winter in 1900 when two logging horses named Tex and Jerry wandered into deep snow. They spent a month on their own before rescuers found them gaunt, hungry, but alive.

  • The lake was formed by the completion of the Hungry Horse Dam in 1953.



    • Massive ice age glaciers carved out the broad, U-shaped basin where Lake McDonald now sits.

    Montana holds the U.S. record for the greatest 24-hour temperature change, when the temperature rose 103°F in a single day (from -54°F to 49°F in Loma in 1972.
