My love of Photography began in 1968 during fourth grade. I took an inexpensive, plastic Kodak camera on a school trip to the Philadelphia Zoo. I vividly remember the strong emotional response I had when I first viewed the black and white prints from that day of photography. By the time I reached sixth grade, I had a basic black and white darkroom in the basement and had found a life-long hobby. Jump eight years ahead. It’s around 11:30 pm. I am a chemical engineering student in the library at the University of Delaware. Feverishly studying for a Physical Chemistry final exam, I am not enjoying myself. Life-changing questions abruptly enter my mind. “Why are you doing this? Is this what you want to pursue as a career” I packed up by books and left the library for good. It’s now 1984. I’ve graduated with honors from Rochester Institute of Photography with a BS in Professional Photography. Not having immediate success at landing a job with a commercial, advertising photographer, I accept a “temporary” position with an in-home, portrait photography company. I discover that working with and photographing people is even more fun than photographing products. After nine years of mostly happy employment and a few sales awards with the company, I realized it was time to build relationships with my own clients and work for myself. Combining the experiences of offering the best possible location for portrait photography (in the home) and the desire to work for myself it was a natural progression for me to start The Traveling Photographer.
