How it all began

My love of Photography began in 1968 during fourth grade. I took an inexpensive, plastic Kodak camera on a school trip to the Philadelphia Zoo.  I can still  remember the excitement I had when I first viewed the black and white prints from that day of photography.

By the time I had reached the sixth grade, photography was my biggest hobby. My father helped me set up a basic black and white darkroom in the basement. I had a blast learning to develop the film and watching the prints emerge from the developer. Soonafter, I began experimenting with color photography and tripled the size of my basement darkroom.

Jump six years ahead in time. It’s around 11:30 pm.  I am now a chemical engineering student, spending time in the library at the University of Delaware.  Feverishly studying for a Physical Chemistry final exam, I am not enjoying myself. Life-changing questions abruptly enter my mind. “Why are you doing this? Is this what you want to pursue as a career”  That would be no. I packed up by books into my book bag and walked out the door.

It’s now 1984. I’ve now graduated from Rochester Institute of Photography with a BS in Professional Photography.  Not having immediate success at landing a job with a commercial, advertising photographer, I accept a “temporary” position with an in-home, portrait photography company.  I discover that working with and photographing people is fun and it becomes my new passion.

After nine years of mostly happy employment and a few awards with that company, I realized it was time to build relationships with my own clients. This would allow me to better serve people by working with them dircetly, one on one.

Combining the experiences of offering the best possible location for portrait photography (in the home) and the desire to work for myself, it was a natural progression for me to start The Traveling Photographer.

When it comes to portraits, there’s no place like home.
